India, Tamil Nadu, Chennai: A potentially serious incident was avoided early on 14 December after a high-voltage transformer caught fire at the Manali 400/230 kV substation, a key electricity supply point for the city.
According to a senior official from the electricity department, the incident occurred at around 5 a.m., when a fault developed in one of the substation’s high-voltage transformers. The Manali substation plays a central role in distributing power across the city, making the swift response critical.
Following the fault, on-site maintenance teams immediately activated the transformer’s built-in safety systems and isolated the affected unit from the wider distribution network. These actions helped limit the impact on the grid and prevented the fault from escalating into a larger outage.
Despite the rapid isolation, the heat generated by the fault led to a small fire within the transformer. Fire and rescue services were called to the site and worked alongside substation staff to bring the situation under control. The fire was successfully contained and prevented from spreading to nearby electrical equipment.
Officials confirmed that the incident did not result in a major disruption to power supply, thanks to the prompt operation of protection systems and emergency response measures.
The event highlights the importance of effective protection systems, routine maintenance and rapid response in high-voltage substations, where faults can quickly develop into serious safety and reliability risks if not managed promptly.
