Johannesburg emergency services say safety clearance at the fire-damaged Bree Substation is only expected on Saturday, “when the environment stabilises”.
Until then, it said on Friday, the cause of the fire and the extent of damage cannot be officially investigated.
A fire broke out at the substation in the early hours of Friday, leaving residents and businesses in several areas without electricity.
City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena says areas affected by the outage include Newtown, Braamfontein, Parktown, the Johannesburg CBD, and surrounding suburbs.
In a statement, City Power also confirmed that, as a precautionary safety measure, three floors of a residential building located above the substation were evacuated.
This marks the second electricity-related fire in the City of Johannesburg in less than a week, following a transformer explosion in New Doornfontein on Monday.
City Power said the Bree Substation will remain switched off until investigations, damage assessments, and risk evaluations have been completed.
“Restoration of supply will only commence once it has been confirmed that it is safe to do so. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused,” said City Power spokesperson, Isaac Mangena.
Meanwhile, ActionSA in Johannesburg said the explosion highlights the broader crisis of City Power’s failing infrastructure.
It said the incident occurred in an area where residents and businesses have long experienced frequent power outages and delayed maintenance responses.
The party’s Johannesburg regional chairperson, Themba Mabunda, called for two immediate interventions.
“An independent technical audit of City Power’s transformer and substation network, prioritising high-density areas such as the CBD, Braamfontein, and Newtown; and the establishment of a publicly accessible risk register identifying infrastructure requiring urgent maintenance or replacement, with clear timelines and budget allocations.”
