A major fire accident in the Manali 400/230 kilo volt (KV) substation was averted after a high voltage transformer caught fire in the early morning on Sunday.
A senior official of the electricity department said at around 5 a.m. on Sunday, a fault occurred in the high-voltage transformer at the Manali substation, which is the main source of power distribution to the city. Following this, the maintenance staff immediately switched on the safety devices installed in the transformer and isolated the transformer from the distribution system.
However, the heat generated by the fault caused a small fire which was brought under control. It was prevented from spreading to other nearby electrical equipment with the help of the fire and rescue services personnel.
J. Radhakrishnan, Chairman and Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Power Generation Corporation Limited (TNPGCL) inspected the substation.
