Oklahoma fire departments face critical funding delays as government shutdown impacts FEMA grants, threatening equipment, staffing, and training for emergency services across the state.
As the partial government shutdown enters its fifth week, fire departments across Oklahoma are feeling the impact.
Local fire chiefs say delays at the federal level are putting critical funding on hold.
Deer Creek Fire Chief Cory Beagles says departments depend on federal grants for equipment, staffing and training.
The Oklahoma State Firefighters Association has received Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grants multiple times to provide free training across the state.
Beagles reports that grant applications are not opening on schedule, leaving departments in limbo.
Fire departments may need to scramble to prepare applications once funding becomes available again.
Sheri Nickel of the Oklahoma Fire Association warns that without FEMA grants, they may have to shut down training efforts for volunteers.
Of the state’s more than 900 fire departments, only about 200 are career departments. The rest rely heavily on volunteers and federal funding.
Nickel emphasizes that without well-trained firefighters, community response to emergencies could be compromised.
