LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — A chance detour turned into a life-saving moment for one local man who sprang into action after spotting a house fire while driving home.
Daniel Pidit said he and his son were driving by when he noticed “black smoke” and saw flames.
Pidit said he pulled in and focused first on getting people out safely.
“I backed up in here, made sure everybody was out of the house,” he said. “Once everybody was out we proceeded to try to extinguish the flames as best we can, we just had a little garden hose and you know with the help of her grandson we actually took out most of those flames before the firefighters had gotten here.”
Among those rescued was Yvette Ground, who has lived at the home for more than a decade. She said she was inside resting while her two grandchildren were in other parts of the house when the incident began.
Her grandson heard a noise near the back gate but initially dismissed it as one of the family’s cats. Moments later, loud banging at the front door changed everything.
“A neighbor was banging really hard,” Ground said. “He told us there was a fire in our backyard.”
That neighbor was Pidit.
Pidit said the hose was short, but they worked with what they had. “Yes, it was a very small hose so you know we were working with everything that we had, and he did help out tremendously with whatever we can,” he said.
Pidit said his main concern, after making sure everyone was out, was stopping the fire from spreading.
Firefighters then arrived and finished putting out the fire. He also said the home was “unlivable at the moment,” but that everyone made it out safely, including pets.
“I’m just happy that they're all safe and I'm happy that you know the house didn't catch completely on fire,” he said. “Unfortunately it is unlivable at the moment but at least you know they're still alive and everybody's fine the cats in the house were fine.”
As for Ground, she says the timing of the warning may have saved their lives.
“I feel blessed,” she said. “If it wasn’t for him, we probably would have all fallen asleep. With my breathing problems, I might not have made it out. We could have lost everything — or worse.”
