SAN DIEGO — Fire crews in Santee remained on high alert Monday after a brush fire along a riverbed threatened multiple businesses in a nearby shopping. Firefighters contained the blaze relatively quickly, but personnel continued monitoring for hot spots that could reignite. At least one fire engine stayed stationed at the scene overnight into Tuesday morning.
The fire ignited in the riverbed north of a shopping center along Town Center Parkway at around 6:40 Sunday evening. Although the flames did not reach nearby homes, they came dangerously close to commercial structures, forcing the evacuation of some businesses in the shopping center.
“We saw it start and then spread,” said Melia Lopez, a Santee resident who lives just north of the riverbed where the fire started.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze relatively quickly Sunday night, but the threat persisted into Monday. Six fire engines and a water tender patrolled the area on Monday, and one hot spot flared up around 5:30 p.m. before crews quickly extinguished it.
“We had six fire engines out here today and a water tender out patrolling the area, hitting some hot spots,” said Santee Fire Battalion Chief Scott Larson.
Residents expressed both fear and appreciation during the incident. “We were freaking out! We didn’t know if we should move or pack our stuff, my dog. It was really scary,” Lopez told CBS 8.
Another resident, Brandon Bleyle, described the tense situation: “It was a hairy situation,” he said. “It’s been a while since I saw a fire like this size and capacity. The whole thing was torched.”
Lopez voiced concern for the broader community: “Any time there we saw another explosion or flare-up of smoke, we were like. ‘I hope that’s not somebody’s house, I hope that’s not a building, I hope everybody’s safe, I hope the wildlife is safe.'”
Despite the danger, residents commended the emergency response. “Thank god for our first responders,” said Lopez. Bleyle added, “They responded quick, hats off to them, they did a hell of a job.”
The city of Santee is currently going through the environmental review process for a $7.2 million federal grant from FEMA designed to clear brush and fire hazards along the San Diego River Corridor. A significant portion of the riverbed contains protected wildlife habitat. Once the review concludes, FEMA will evaluate the project and provide final approval for the cleanup, possibly later this year.
According to Battalion Chief Larson, such a project could substantially reduce fire risk in the area: “Certainly, or if not prevent the fire, at least prevent the danger to the structures,” he added, “because this burned up the slope out of the riverbed and got really close to the commercial structures here. It would create that buffer where there would be a safer distance between the fire and the structures.”
Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire, which remains undetermined at this time.
