Firefighters have shared more information on the dramatic blaze which tore through a Chippenham substation and cut off power in the town.
The fire, which took place on Tuesday evening, January 6, saw more than 800 homes in Chippenham left without power when a blaze broke out at a substation on Gloucester Close.
The blackout hit the town at around 6.16pm, causing panic for many residents.
One local told the Gazette & Herald: “I was in Sainsbury’s when all the lights went out. They were stopping people coming in.”
Dramatic photos which emerged from the scene of the fire showed an electrical transformer blackened and burnt, with gates around the site warning of “danger of death” due to the large amounts of electricity passing through the area.

Now, 14 hours after the blaze broke out, firefighters have confirmed that two crews from Chippenham and Corsham attended.
A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire Service said: “We were called to Gloucester Close, Chippenham at 6.15pm last night (6 January) for a fire involving an electrical transformer.
“Two crews attended, from Chippenham and Corsham, and they kept the surrounding area dampened down and safe until SSE engineers were able to isolate the power supply.
“One hose reel jet was then used to extinguish the fire, and our stop was at 7.26pm.”

Streets that were affected by the mass power outage included parts of Derriads Lane, Conway Road, Queens Crescent, Sarum Road, Turpin Way, Avebury Road, Gascelyn Close, Hungerdown Lane, Orchard Road, Orchard Crescent, Beale Court, Frogwell, Westbrook Close, Wessex Road, Saxon Street, and Brook Street.
Engineers from Scottish and Southern Electricity Network also attended the fire and worked alongside firefighters in Wiltshire to make the area safe.

SSE described the cause of the blackout to customers as “damage to our network”.
“When this happens, the power will automatically turn off to keep everyone safe,” said a spokesperson for the electricity network.
“Our engineers know exactly where the problem is and are working hard to make the situation safe, repair the wire, and get your power back on.”
It is unclear how long the damage at the substation will take to fully repair.
However, as of Wednesday morning, January 7, power has been restored to all homes in Chippenham.
