LYNNWOOD, Wash. — A Lynnwood single mother of three is rebuilding her life after a massive fire destroyed her home this week — and claimed the life of her landlord.
The fire broke out around 8:30 p.m. Monday at a duplex just south of the Whole Foods off 28th Avenue West. What remains now are charred walls, broken glass, and yellow caution tape — the haunting aftermath of a tragedy that left one man dead and a family without a place to live.
“It’s terrible,” said Heather Cromwell, walking through what’s left of her home. “I don’t really like coming in here because it’s really hard for me… we had a home and now we have this. It’s really hard to process.”
According to Cromwell, one of her daughter’s boyfriends first noticed something strange that night — a faint smell. Moments later, smoke filled the upstairs. She rushed to get everyone out, including her 25-year-old son with special needs, her 19-year-old twin daughters, the boyfriend, and their two dogs.
But her landlord, Ken, didn’t make it out.
“We were screaming for him,” she recalled. “But the amount of flames coming from that door… clearly someone didn’t make it. Unfortunately, Ken did not.”
Among the ashes, one small piece of hope remained: a shelf holding Cromwell’s parents’ ashes — miraculously untouched by the flames.
Despite losing nearly everything, Cromwell’s spirit remains unbroken.
“Something good is going to happen,” she said. “I just know it.”
Officials with South County Fire say the cause is still under investigation.
Cromwell’s family has launched an online fundraiser to help them start over.
