On October 2, 2023, a devastating fire broke out at a furniture factory in Xitun District, Taichung, at 5:23 a.m. The city’s Fire Bureau received reports of the fire and swiftly deployed 30 fire engines and 84 firefighters to combat the blaze.

The two-story iron structure was engulfed in flames upon arrival, and despite efforts, the fire spread to another adjacent iron structure, affecting an area of approximately 2,000 square meters. The fire was finally extinguished at 9:01 a.m., resulting in the tragic loss of three lives and an estimated NT$10 million in damages.

The factory’s owner, Kuo, aged 70, managed to escape the blaze and was treated for second-degree burns covering 30% of his body. He informed rescuers that his wife, son, and nephew were still trapped inside. Unfortunately, they were later found without any signs of life.

According to Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen, the presence of highly flammable materials within the factory contributed significantly to the rapid spread of the fire. She mentioned that the family had moved the wife, who had recently suffered a stroke, to the factory for better care.

The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, but initial reports suggest that the unsafe storage of materials may have played a role.

This tragedy highlights the critical importance of early fire detection systems. Traditional fire alarms often respond only after smoke or flames are visible, risking greater damage and loss of life.
