The M&S depot has resumed operations following a fire that occurred overnight at an industrial estate, which engulfed eight HGV lorries. Avon Fire and Rescue Service received multiple calls and dispatched several crews to the Gist depot on Short Way, Thornbury, at 1:34 AM BST.

Fortunately, there were no casualties and everyone was accounted for after the evacuation. An M&S spokesperson stated, “All our colleagues are safe, the depot itself did not catch fire, and operations resumed earlier this morning.”

Avon Fire and Rescue Service reported that the fire is believed to have been caused by an accidental ignition. Specifically, the blaze started due to a mechanical failure on one of the HGV lorries.

Initial investigations suggest that the truck experienced a mechanical fault that led to a fuel leak, which subsequently ignited and spread to other parked lorries.

The cause of the mechanical failure could be related to the truck’s age or inadequate maintenance. People were advised to avoid the area around Short Way, and nearby residents were instructed to keep their windows closed. The spokesperson also thanked the Avon & Somerset Fire & Rescue teams for their efforts in handling the fire.

Currently, one crew remains at the scene and will re-inspect later in the afternoon to ensure safety.

A total of 24 firefighters from various locations attended the incident, using a turntable ladder, drone, water tower, and jets and hose reel jets to extinguish the blaze.

The estimated loss from this fire is approximately $500,000. In response, government and fire departments have begun implementing preventive measures and follow-up inspections to prevent similar incidents in the future.
