ATLANTA (CNN Newsource/WSB/WKRC) – A dear pet chihuahua might be small, but she has a loud bark.
Luckily, she put that loud bark to use and alerted her family that their house was on fire.
Sandra Thomas was asleep on the couch in what is now a scorched front room when the house first caught fire just a little bit after midnight.
"That's my baby right here," said Thomas.
She said that Bella, the family's pet chihuahua, is always at her side and always aware of what's going on.
"She heard it, and she was trying to tell me to get up because she kept barking and barking," said Thomas.
At that point, Thomas said she knew something serious was happening.
"But she would growl at me and let me know we need to get out of here or get up or do something," said Thomas.
As the fire spread, Bella went from just barking to jumping up on the couch next to her.
"I said, 'Girl, what's wrong with you? You know not to jump in my chair.' And when I looked up, I saw flames," said Thomas.
The dog then alerted her grandson, who also made it out of the burning home. Atlanta firefighters made it to the scene and quickly put out the fire, and they too credit Bella with saving lives.
"That small dog was able to get everyone up and get them out. That way nobody needed to be rescued," said Atlanta Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Matt Driver.
The family is now getting help from the American Red Cross to start rebuilding.
"She's always with me," said Thomas. "God was there with my dog, and he was there to show my dog how to help me get up."
The fire is still under investigation, but it is believed to have started in the laundry room.
