Planck Vision Systems: Ibadan Market Fire Destroys Over 40 Shops, Estimated Damage in the Millions of Naira

On the evening of September 1, 2024, a devastating fire broke out at the Oranyan Market’s herbal section in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, destroying over 40 shops.

Although no lives were lost, the blaze caused significant damage, with property valued at millions of naira being consumed. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown.

Market vendors, who were not present at the market during the incident as it was closed, have ruled out electrical faults or food-related causes, as the market is not connected to the national grid and no food vendors were operating at the time.

Fatimoh Adebimpe, a market youth leader, noted that traders usually leave the market by 7:00 PM, and the fire was reported by locals who saw it around 10:00 PM.

Another victim, Kafaya Lucky, mentioned that large amounts of cash were kept in shops to facilitate transactions with hunters, while Kehinde Moronfade shared her distress over the loss, especially as she had just acquired a loan the day before.

Yemi Akinyinka, General Manager of the state Fire Services, confirmed that the fire started at 11:25 PM and was extinguished by 3:36 AM.

The blaze affected 20 prefabricated shops, with damage estimated in the millions of naira, though billions of naira worth of property were saved.

Local government officials have visited the site and promised to address the situation, and market vendors are hopeful for support and compensation.

To prevent and mitigate such disasters, early fire detection systems are crucial. Planck Vision TNC thermal imaging cameras are significantly more effective than traditional systems, which only detect fires after visible smoke and flames appear.
