On September 23, 2024, at 5 AM, a fire broke out at the BioLab chemical plant in East Atlanta, caused by a malfunctioning sprinkler head that mixed water with a reactive chemical, producing toxic smoke. The fire resulted in estimated losses of $2 million, prompting evacuations of local residents while others were advised to shelter in place to avoid harmful substances. Although there were employees inside the plant, no injuries were reported. The smoke was visible up to 30 miles (50 kilometers) away.

In the eastern part of Atlanta, a chemical plant fire occurred on Sunday, prompting evacuations for some residents while others were advised to shelter in place to avoid harmful contaminants.
According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, Interstate 20 was shut down in both directions due to the incident, leading to severe traffic congestion. The fire ignited around 5 AM at the BioLab plant when a malfunctioning sprinkler head caused water to mix with a water-reactive chemical, producing toxic smoke.
Rockdale County Fire Chief Marian McDaniel reported that there were employees inside the plant, but no injuries have been reported. The billowing smoke was visible up to 30 miles (50 kilometers) away at Atlanta’s international airport. McDaniel stated, “Once we can get that chemical out of the building and allow it to burn off, we’ll be in a much better shape.”
Initial estimates suggest that the fire may result in losses amounting to $2 million. Authorities are considering enhanced regulations and fire prevention measures for chemical handling and storage facilities to prevent similar incidents in the future.
