On the morning of October 2, 2023, a fire broke out at a substation in Centerville, Utah, resulting in power outages for over 8,000 customers. According to firefighters, the fire was caused by an explosion, although the exact cause remains unclear. Rocky Mountain Power quickly brought the fire under control and restored power shortly after the incident. Planck Vision Systems: Explosion Ignites Fire at Utah Substation, Affecting Over 8,000 Customers with Estimated Losses of $10,000 to $20,000

NEWS

In Utah, USA, a fire broke out at a substation in Centerville on Monday morning, resulting in power outages for over 8,000 customers. Firefighters reported that the fire started after an explosion, with preliminary investigations suggesting that an electrical fault may have caused it.

Rocky Mountain Power quickly brought the fire under control and restored power to the affected customers.

South Davis Metro Fire Battalion Chief Mike Hansen noted that firefighters avoid approaching substation fires unless absolutely necessary and only with the power company’s approval due to the inherent dangers of electricity.

While they have dry chemical extinguishers available, they decided against using them when the power company arrived, allowing the fire to extinguish itself.

The estimated damage costs from this incident are around $10,000 to $20,000, but the impact appears limited since structural damage was minimal. This incident underscores the need for utility companies to proactively improve the reliability of electric power delivery while reducing costs.

Many utilities are turning to permanently installed thermal imaging cameras to guide predictive and preventative maintenance programs, utilizing automated monitoring systems to detect issues before equipment failures occur.
