On Thursday, September 5, 2024, a fire broke out at a San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) battery storage facility located on the 500 block of Enterprise Street in Escondido.
The fire, which started around noon, was triggered by a lithium-ion battery storage container catching fire.
The Escondido Fire Department responded to alarms reporting smoke and a fire in a trailer housing these battery units. Firefighters battled the blaze through the night, managing to contain it to one storage unit by 1 a.m. on Friday.
Approximately 500 businesses and 1,500 customers were evacuated as a precaution, with some local schools closing.
The estimated damage is around $200,000, primarily due to the cost of containment and cleanup. The City of Escondido lifted all evacuation orders by noon on Saturday.
Hazmat units assessed the area for hazards, and residents registered with Alert San Diego or Genasys received notifications to return.
