The fire was triggered by an “internal cable fault” at the substation, which caused smoke alarms to activate around 5:09 p.m., according to Vector. This prompted an immediate response from Fire and Emergency NZ, which dispatched six fire trucks, two ladder trucks, and a specialist command vehicle to the scene.

The quick action by Fire and Emergency NZ ensured the fire was extinguished by 6 p.m. Power was restored once the site was cleared and the fault was isolated. The estimated financial impact of the incident is around $50,000, accounting for emergency response costs and equipment repairs.
