On January 8, 2025, a fire broke out at a recycling facility located in Kea’au, Hawaii, resulting in significant disruptions. The blaze, which ignited a large scrap metal pile, involved approximately 75% of the 50 ft by 50 ft area. The pile, which contained scrap metal and large tires, was located under a steel metal structure at the facility. The fire was caused by a vehicle compactor that was crushing a car, sparking the pile into flames.

Upon arrival at the scene, emergency units quickly assessed the situation. Firefighters worked swiftly to secure a water supply, bringing the fire under control by 9:20 a.m. Heavy equipment operators from BISM used excavators to dig through the scrap metal pile to expose the seat of the fire, extinguishing the flames by 10:30 a.m.

The fire caused an estimated $180,000 in damage, affecting the recycling services provided at multiple transfer stations. As a result, the East Hawai’i Department of Environmental Management temporarily suspended the acceptance of metals and appliances at several transfer stations, including Honokaʻa, Laupāhoehoe, Volcano, Pāhala, and Waiʻōhinu. However, metal and appliance recycling services are still available at the Pāhoa, Kea‘au, and Hilo Transfer Stations, until those sites reach their capacity.

The fire incident highlights the importance of early fire detection, especially in facilities dealing with large quantities of scrap metal and tires.
