On December 8, 2024, in Qualicum Beach, a potentially deadly fire was sparked by a lithium polymer battery, which had been recently purchased by Fire Chief Nick Acciavatti for use in an airsoft gun. The battery had been removed from the gun after it was fully discharged and was simply left on the floor to rest. However, about 15 minutes later, the battery self-detonated and exploded, releasing thick smoke and catching nearby objects on fire.

When the explosion occurred, Acciavatti’s wife was in the garage and heard the smoke alarm blaring from inside the house. She rushed in to find the room filled with smoke. Upon entering the boys’ bedroom, she discovered the battery on the floor, still in the process of detonating. A small scarf, which had been lying near the battery, had caught fire, and the flames were beginning to spread toward the closet. In an urgent response, she grabbed a pot of water and ran back to the bedroom, but by the time she returned, the fire had already reached part of the closet and some clothing.


The fire caused an estimated property damage of $10,000. Although the quick action of Acciavatti’s wife helped prevent further spread, the incident demonstrates how dangerous and unpredictable lithium battery fires can be, especially when the battery is not in use. The explosion caused a significant fire risk, which could have been much worse if not for the timely intervention.


This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of early fire detection, especially when dealing with volatile items like lithium batteries.
