On Wednesday, December 11, 2024, at around 5:15 pm, a fire broke out at a 66 KV grid located on Tajpur Road. The fire started when a blast occurred in the LV side bush of one of the transformers, rapidly spreading to a nearby transformer due to strong winds. The fire caused significant damage, with the loss of two transformers, amounting to an estimated ₹7 crore.

Multiple fire tenders were dispatched immediately after the incident, with 10 to 12 units working tirelessly to bring the fire under control. It took over seven hours to extinguish the flames completely, with one fire tender remaining on standby at the grid to address any potential flare-ups. Despite the severity of the fire, the chances of further incidents are now slim, according to the fire department.

By Wednesday night, power was restored to residential areas, using six 11 KV feeders, and efforts were intensified to restore power to nearly 1,000 affected industrial units. The restoration work was given priority for the industrial units, which was expected to be completed by Thursday night, using alternative power grids.

Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) officials, including director DPS Grewal, visited the site to supervise the restoration efforts. The damaged grid will be brought back online in phases, and one of the damaged transformers is expected to be operational by Sunday, while the second transformer will be repaired and running by the following Thursday. Full power restoration is anticipated by that time.

This incident underscores the importance of early fire detection and prevention, especially in power substations where the risk of widespread disruption is high. Planck Vision Systems thermal imaging cameras provide 24/7 monitoring of substations, ensuring early detection of any anomalies.

By utilizing fixed mount or pan/tilt drive cameras, large areas can be surveyed with crisp thermal images, offering crucial data that helps prevent costly failures. These advanced systems ensure that potential issues are identified before they cause significant damage, protecting both infrastructure and industrial productivity.
