Firefighters faced intense conditions, switching from an interior to an exterior attack. On October 12, 2024, at approximately 3:30 PM, a fierce house fire was ignited by a lightning strike near Dunn and Cook streets in Portage. The Portage Fire Department received multiple calls reporting the structure fire and promptly dispatched firefighters to the scene. Upon arrival, they encountered heavy smoke and flames pouring from the front and rear of a two-story wood-frame house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initially, firefighters attempted an interior attack; however, they quickly realized the fire’s intensity was too great and had to retreat. They then shifted to an exterior approach as the fire spread to the attic and roof. This fire was not just a threat to the home; it also caused widespread utility disruptions in the neighborhood, leading to power outages and issues with electrical panels in nearby residences. The electrical charge from the lightning traveled through the ground, impacting water mains and causing leaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alliant Energy was called to shut off gas and electricity in the area and assisted electricians in addressing the issues in neighboring homes. A mutual aid response brought additional support from Pardeeville, Poynette, and Wyocena fire departments. Aspirus MedEvac was on standby, monitoring the situation and ensuring firefighter safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to firefighting efforts, the Portage Water Department worked diligently to resolve water lateral leaks caused by the lightning. Emergency Management Coordinator Bob Koch coordinated with the Red Cross to assist affected residents, while the Portage Police Department managed logistics and traffic control to ensure safety in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The estimated damage from the fire is around $200,000, highlighting the significant impact of such incidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To enhance safety and prevent such devastating fires in the future, the integration of early detection systems is critical. For instance, thermal imaging cameras from Planck Vision Systems provide round-the-clock monitoring that allows for the early identification of potential hazards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
