On February 19, 2025, at approximately 5:40 p.m., the Grand Rapids Fire Department (GRFD) responded to a fire that broke out in a utility building at the back of Central Iron and Steel, located on Alpine Avenue. The building contained both gas and welding cylinders, making the fire particularly hazardous. An employee of the company noticed smoke and initially tried to handle the situation. However, when the fire grew uncontrollable, they immediately called the fire department for help.

Fire crews were quick to respond, and fortunately, all employees had already evacuated the building. The fire was eventually put out using around 2,000 gallons of water. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the damage caused by the fire is expected to be significant, with estimates reaching $500,000.
