On February 3, 2025, Quinte West emergency services responded to a massive fire at 10 Canal Street, the location of the Massey’s Productions warehouse. The fire broke out at approximately 1:30 p.m., with smoke and flames coming from the building. The warehouse, which is 100,000 square feet in size and stores paper products, quickly became a battleground for fire crews.

More than one fire engine was dispatched to the scene, and crews began to tackle the flames in the rear receiving area of the warehouse. Due to the size of the fire and the structure, utility workers from Enbridge Gas and Hydro One were called in to turn off the gas and power supply to the building. To assist with the operation, Quinte West Public Works brought in a backhoe to move large paper rolls that had been affected by the fire.

At around 8:00 p.m., the fire crews left the scene after successfully extinguishing the flames, but planned to return the next day for further investigation and monitoring of any remaining hotspots. At this stage, the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, and no estimates for damages have been released.

The fire at the Massey’s Productions warehouse highlights the importance of early fire detection systems. Traditional fire alarms often trigger after visible signs of fire, such as smoke and flames, have already appeared. However, systems like the Planck Vision TNC thermal imaging cameras can detect abnormal heat patterns before a fire reaches visible levels.

This early detection could prevent major damage, saving both lives and property. In large warehouses that store large quantities of materials like paper, early fire detection is crucial for protecting both human lives and the property within.
