City Power says its technicians have completed the damage assessments at the Cydna substation in Johannesburg.
A fire tore through the substation on Thursday, leaving areas such as Melrose, Highlands North, Bramley, Illovo, Killarney, and Hyde Park without electricity.  

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said that during the assessment, it was discovered that protection cables were damaged.

“Preliminary indications suggest vandalism linked to attempted cable theft as a possible cause, with investigations still ongoing.”

Mangena added that large parts of Melrose, Killarney, and Hyde Park remained without power on Friday due to technicians’ restoration efforts. 

All power is expected to be restored by six o’clock on Friday evening.
