LEAWOOD, Kan. (KCTV) – Investigators with the City of Leawood and Leawood Fire Department say a lightning strike is to blame for a massive house fire.
The fire, which crews from the Leawood, Lenexa and Overland Park fire departments responded to Tuesday night, happened at a home near 119th Street and Cherokee Lane.
Crews responded to the area after a call reported the fire just before 6 p.m. Tuesday. Shortly after 8:30, the fire was under control.
“Following an investigation, officials determined the most likely cause of the fire to be a lightning strike,” a city spokesperson said. “Weather reports confirmed multiple lightning strikes were recorded near the residence during a storm that moved through the area earlier that morning.”
The Leawood Fire Department told KCTV Tuesday night that the residents of the home were not there at the time, which firefighters believed allowed the fire to develop into a larger blaze before neighbors noticed and reported it.
Two Leawood firefighters suffered minor injuries fighting the fire and one of them was hospitalized for precautionary reasons. On Wednesday, the Leawood Fire Department said both individuals were treated and released.
