Recently the Washington Fire Department took part in a house fire training exercise.
City Administrator Joe Gaa shares more information on the exercise held May 3rd, “Folks might have noticed in the midst of a lot of other things going on there was some black smoke in the sky in the southwest corner of town, and for those that ventured down, there were a few folks. We saw some folks driving along the highway really slow. There was a fire department training burn, on a house that sits up on top of the hill just as you enter or exit on Highway 1. That’s a city-owned property, it has been for a long time. We call it the Bartholow farm, that was the family that we purchased it from. And it has some aging buildings, and an aging house that hasn’t been lived in, and would have needed a lot of renovations taken care of so that was done. Our fire department, both our full time firefighters and volunteers were out there working on that. It’s kind of interesting because oftentimes when firefighters show up the goal is to put the fire out. With doing that you don’t often get to see what happens if nobody notices the fire for a long time and we have to get on a really developed fire, and so that’s what this does. It allows them to see some things that they might not normally see.”
The training had originally been planned for March, but due to scheduling conflicts was pushed back. The Fire Department takes part in two training sessions a year.
