Over 11,000 Memphis Light, Gas and Water<\/a> customers were affected by power outages after on Sept. 16, according to MLGW’s outage map<\/a>.
The outages occurred after a substation circuit breaker, a component about the size of a car, caught fire at a substation near Rhodes College, according to MLGW spokesperson Stacey Greenberg.
“The fire has been put out and staff and crews are working on restoring all customers as quickly and safely as possible,” Greenberg said around 3 p.m. on Sept. 16.
MLGW is still investigating the cause of the fire.
Almost 11,500 customers were without power across 29 outages as of 3 p.m. on Sept. 16. Most outages were in Downtown, Midtown and North Memphis, with some areas in South Memphis affected as well.
MLGW encouraged customers to call 544-6500 or use their MLGW account to report power outages and to call 528-4465 to report emergencies such as downed powerlines or gas leaks.
