L'incendie a caus\u00e9 la mort tragique de deux membres d'\u00e9quipage et en a bless\u00e9 un autre gri\u00e8vement. L'incendie s'est d\u00e9clar\u00e9 lorsque du gazole a d\u00e9bord\u00e9 dans la salle des machines, causant d'importants d\u00e9g\u00e2ts. Le <em>Foul\u00e9e<\/em> a finalement \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9clar\u00e9e perte totale, avec une valeur estim\u00e9e \u00e0 $12 millions d'euros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L'enqu\u00eate men\u00e9e par le National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) des \u00c9tats-Unis a r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 que l'incendie avait \u00e9t\u00e9 provoqu\u00e9 par l'installation d'une valve incorrecte sur le r\u00e9servoir de gasoil du navire. Six semaines avant l'incendie, une vanne de remplacement avait \u00e9t\u00e9 command\u00e9e pour la citerne \u00e0 double fond de b\u00e2bord. Cependant, la vanne install\u00e9e n'\u00e9tait pas du m\u00eame type que celle sp\u00e9cifi\u00e9e dans le plan du syst\u00e8me de fuel du navire. La mauvaise vanne, un clapet anti-retour \u00e0 angle, permettait au gasoil de s'\u00e9couler dans une seule direction, m\u00eame lorsqu'elle \u00e9tait ouverte. De ce fait, le gasoil d\u00e9bordait d'un autre r\u00e9servoir pendant l'avitaillement et \u00e9tait dirig\u00e9 vers la conduite d'a\u00e9ration commune.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En cons\u00e9quence, le gazole s'est \u00e9coul\u00e9 d'une petite section du tuyau de ventilation qui avait \u00e9t\u00e9 scell\u00e9e auparavant, et le mat\u00e9riau de scellement s'est rompu. Le gazole s'est alors d\u00e9vers\u00e9 dans la salle des machines, o\u00f9 il s'est enflamm\u00e9 au contact des machines en fonctionnement, d\u00e9clenchant l'incendie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La gravit\u00e9 de l'incendie est \u00e9galement due au fait que l'\u00e9quipage du navire n'a pas contr\u00f4l\u00e9 les niveaux des citernes pendant le processus de soutage, ce qui est une exigence du syst\u00e8me de gestion de la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 du navire.
