Sandton power is expected to be restored by Sunday evening after a fire at the Cydna substation plunged parts of the north Johannesburg area into darkness on Thursday, with City Power suspecting vandalism and theft as the cause.

The outage, which began around 08:54 on 18 September 2025, affected suburbs including Sandton, Melrose, Illovo, Houghton, Alexandra, and surrounding areas, leaving residents and businesses without electricity for days. City Power teams have been working tirelessly to repair the damage, with spokesperson Isaac Mangena confirming suspicions of attempted cable theft as the trigger for the blaze. As restoration efforts near completion, the utility hopes to have full supply back by the evening of 21 September 2025, providing much-needed relief to affected communities.

The fire at the Cydna substation, preliminarily believed to be caused by attempted theft of copper cables, has disrupted power to key northern Johannesburg areas since Thursday morning. Mangena stated: “City Power teams have been working hard to basically ensure that we restore power supply to parts of Sandton, including Melrose, Illovo, Houghton, and the surrounding areas, following a fire at our Cydna substation. The fire, preliminarily, we believe that was caused by attempted theft of cables at the Sydney substation, but the police and everyone else from the law enforcement have been informed and we are hoping that whoever the people who were attempting to steal the copper cables there can be found and be arrested.”

City Power’s updates on social media detailed the complexity of repairs, including laying protection cables to prevent future incidents. “Due to the complexity of repairs to be conducted following yesterday’s fire at the substation, we are unable to provide a restoration timeline at this stage,” an earlier post noted, but progress has since advanced, with teams on site around the clock.

The incident is part of a broader pattern of cable theft and vandalism plaguing Johannesburg’s electricity infrastructure, which has led to frequent outages and costly repairs. Police have been notified, and investigations are underway to apprehend those responsible.

The power outage has caused significant disruption for residents and businesses in Sandton and surrounding suburbs. Many have reported challenges with daily activities, including working from home, preserving food, and accessing essential services. Social media posts from affected areas showed frustration, with some residents questioning why the repairs were taking so long.

In Alexandra, one of the hardest-hit areas, community leaders called for urgent intervention, noting the impact on vulnerable households. The outage also coincided with scheduled maintenance in other Johannesburg suburbs, exacerbating the strain on the grid.

City Power has apologised for the inconvenience and urged residents to report any suspicious activities around substations to prevent future incidents. Emergency teams have been providing updates via social media, advising patience as the final stages of restoration are completed.
