KIEL – A stove fire caused an estimated $25,000 in damages to a Sixth Street residence in Kiel early Friday morning.
Kiel Fire & Rescue responded to the 900 block of Sixth Street at around 2:20 a.m. June 6 for the report of a stove fire. After learning from Manitowoc County Joint Dispatch Center the fire was spreading to the kitchen cabinets, the department requested additional departments respond to the scene.
When firefighters arrived, they found smoke coming from the building. It was confirmed all occupants had evacuated, and Kiel Police Department assisted in evacuating residents from an upstairs unit.
Firefighters located the fire in the kitchen and extinguished it using a water-based extinguisher. The fire was deemed under control within three minutes of crews arriving and most mutual aid departments were canceled, the department said.
Crews secured the area, ventilated the home to eliminate lingering smoke and conducted overhaul operations to check for fire extension.
A working smoke detector had alerted the occupants in a lower unit, enabling the three individuals who were asleep to evacuate before fire crews arrived.
The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental, resulting from the stovetop being left on and combustible items being left on or near the stovetop.
No one was injured.
