Now six days after wildfires broke out in the Michaux State Forest, firefighters are still working to contain the flames.
In an update Monday evening, the Department of Conversation and Natural Resources said firefighters are making progress combatting the Thompson Hollow Fire and the Hammonds Rocks Fire.
The acreage and containment numbers provided Monday evening were the same as earlier in the day: the Thompson Hollow Fire remains at 2,248 acres with 42% containment, and the Hammonds Rocks Fire remains at 470 acres with 92% containment.

DCNR noted that "containment" means firefighters have surrounded the wildfires and stopped it from spreading past a certain point. "The fire is not completely out, but all progress of the fire has been stopped," DCNR said.

“Crews are working hard to secure the perimeter of the fires so they are staying within their current footprints,” said DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn. “Although there is a lot of smoke from the interior of the fires visible for distances, we are making progress thanks to some hard work by our wildland firefighters, county and local responders, and volunteers.”
The department said 108 workers were responding to the fires, and crews were completing "hazardous tree work," in addition to using air resources that utilize water from Laurel Lake at Pine Grove Furnace State Park.

Two personnel were treated for dehydration and smoke inhalation symptoms, DCNR said Monday evening.
The agency advised forest visitors not to enter burned areas and warned against any outdoor burning activities as fire danger remains high.
The cause of both fires is under investigation.
Officials are expected to give an update around 10 a.m. Tuesday. This article will be updated with any new information.
