Emergency repair teams have been dispatched to repair the power grid after around 40,000 people across seven municipalities lost electricity following overnight strikes. It comes a week after both sites were subject to similar attacks, leaving many residents in the area without power for two days.
Ukraine has been on a mission for months to weaken Russia’s economy by attacking its oil and gas refineries as well as military sites.
It is estimated that Russia, which has a petrol-based economy, has lost at least 17% of its oil supply as a result, leading to long lines at gas stations, while also battling with inflation and high grocery prices.
It was reported by Russian Telegram channels on Sunday that a “missile strike” hit the Luch substation in Belgorod, sparking a fire at the site while triggering power outages across the city.Harrowing footage surfaced on social media of the moment that the substation went up in flames while the lights went out. The extent of damage done to the sites is currently unclear.
There are also reports of some disrupted water supply and internet access as a result of the blast.
The same sites were attacked on Sept. 28, and Russian emergency crews were unable to restore power until two days later.
