SYRACUSE, N.Y. — A late-night fire erupted in a two-family residence late Friday evening, prompting a swift response from the Syracuse Fire Department. Neighbors across the street noticed the blaze and took immediate action, with one calling 911 and another rushing to ensure everyone evacuated safely.
The fire department was dispatched at 11:36 p.m., and the initial engine company arrived on the scene within three minutes. The fire, which originated from the downstairs rear apartment of the 2 1/2 story wood frame building, was extinguished in less than 20 minutes.
Efforts to ventilate smoke and toxic gases took longer due to the structure's layout. Both apartments were occupied at the time, but everyone inside managed to evacuate before the fire department's arrival.
Three people have been displaced by the fire, and the Red Cross is providing assistance. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported among civilians or fire department personnel. An on-duty fire investigator is conducting an investigation into the fire's origin and cause.
