On October 13, 2024, around 10 a.m., the MVF Armana, a 62-year-old fishing trawler operated by Sea Harvest, caught fire while on a fishing expedition approximately 60 nautical miles from Gansbaai. Fortunately, all 20 crew members were able to escape without injuries and were rescued by another Sea Harvest vessel, MFV Ludwani.
Initial reports indicated that the vessel was sinking, prompting the South African Maritime Safety Authority (Samsa) to coordinate rescue efforts. After the crew abandoned the burning ship, they were brought to safety at 7:45 p.m. in Cape Town.
Following the rescue, efforts were made to monitor the MVF Armana as it initially remained adrift. The MFV Harvest Saldanha was deployed for monitoring, and the Emergency Towing Vessel (ETV) Umkhuseli was sent to assist in towing the stricken vessel to safety. However, by early Monday morning, the vessel was lost from sight, and a search was officially called off at 1 p.m. that day, declaring the trawler presumed sunk.
Samsa has issued a navigational warning to other vessels in the area and is currently investigating the cause of the fire, which is suspected to be related to electrical issues. The estimated financial loss from the incident is approximately $500,000, which includes the value of the vessel and associated losses.
Madoda Khumalo, a corporate executive at Sea Harvest, expressed relief that the crew was safe but acknowledged the seriousness of the incident. Each crew member received medical evaluations and counseling support.
