On Saturday, August 24, 2024, at approximately 9:43 p.m., a significant fire erupted at Rivian’s manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois. Fire crews received a call regarding a vehicle fire at the factory, which primarily produces the R1S electric SUV and R1T electric pickup. Upon arrival, fire crews discovered that the situation had escalated rapidly, with around 12 vehicles already “fully involved” in flames.

The fire was upgraded from a single engine response to a three-engine call, reflecting the severity of the situation. Unfortunately, the fire caused substantial damage, with an estimated loss of $5.5 million as reported by the Normal Fire Department.

The incident report noted that the vehicles were located in the parking lot designated for inventory storage. Wind conditions played a role, pushing the fire northward through the cluster of vehicles.

Despite facing initial challenges securing a water source due to malfunctioning hydrants, the fire engines eventually managed to control the fire and extinguish the flames. Crews cleared the scene around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 25. After confirming that all fires were out, the scene was returned to Rivian for further investigation.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but preliminary reports suggest it may be related to an electrical fault or battery failure, which are critical considerations for electric vehicles. This incident underscores the critical need for advanced fire detection systems in manufacturing facilities.
