<p>Witness Sue Keeley described being jolted awake by “really loud bangs,” stating, “It felt like fireworks.” Her daughter called the fire brigade, and the fire engines arrived promptly, extinguishing the flames quickly. However, the strong smell and smoke forced the family to keep their windows shut. </p>



<p>Neighbor Philip Cook also recounted waking to similar crackling sounds, expressing concern due to a previous large fire at the nearby Sackers recycling plant, worried about smoke affecting their home and pets.</p>



<p>The fire service deployed 12 fire vehicles, including six water pumps and an aerial ladder, ensuring the fire was effectively managed. Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire may have been caused by equipment failure or the burning of materials, although details are still being confirmed. </p>



<p>The estimated financial loss from the incident could reach between £50,000 and £100,000, although official figures are yet to be released.</p>



<p>To prevent such incidents in the future, the government may enhance safety inspections and monitoring of recycling facilities. Additionally, utilizing advanced technology for early fire detection is crucial. </p>

<p>With the rapid growth of the electric vehicle (EV) market, the rise in related fire incidents has drawn significant attention. Recent events highlight the increasing fire risks associated with EVs, presenting challenges to vehicle safety.</p>



<p>On August 1, a parked Mercedes-Benz EV in Incheon caught fire spontaneously, and the blaze quickly spread, destroying an entire underground parking garage and other vehicles within it. </p>



<p>This was followed by another incident on August 16, when a Tesla EV caught fire while parked on the side of the road in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, further raising public concerns about EV safety.</p>



<p>According to the Korea Insurance Development Institute, over the past five years, the number of fire and explosion incidents involving EVs has been higher than that for internal combustion engine vehicles. </p>



<p>EVs have 0.93 incidents per 10,000 vehicles, compared to 0.90 for non-EVs. Additionally, the financial losses from EV incidents are significantly higher, with an average loss of 13 million won ($9,700) per incident, which is 1.9 times higher than the 6.9 million won average for non-EVs.</p>



<p>In response to these challenges, major EV manufacturers are actively working on improvements. Mercedes-Benz and Tesla, among others, are enhancing battery technology to improve safety and stability. Mercedes-Benz is investing in better cooling systems for battery modules and strengthening battery monitoring to detect anomalies early. Tesla is implementing multiple safety mechanisms in its new models, including the use of fire-resistant materials and advanced thermal management systems.</p>

<p>A large fire is raging in the industrial area of Prior Velho, near Lisbon&#8217;s international airport in Portugal. </p>



<p>The fire, which began around 18:00 local time, broke out in a long-term parking garage where hundreds of vehicles belonging to travelers were parked. </p>



<p>Local media suggest that the blaze was likely caused by an electric car. </p>



<p>The situation remains critical, with about 140 firefighters and 48 vehicles battling the flames by 21:00. Their main focus has been to prevent the fire from spreading further within the industrial area. </p>



<p>Despite the heavy smoke, air traffic at Lisbon’s international airport has not been disrupted.</p>
