UPSHUR COUNTY, Texas — A Gladewater family is receiving an outpouring of support from the community following a deadly house fire in Upshur County that claimed one life, injured two others and destroyed a home.
The fire broke out at a home on Hawthorne Drive in Upshur County. Officials say Paul Wooten was unable to escape the burning home and died at the scene. Two other people were injured after jumping from windows to escape the flames and were transported to a hospital with cuts. The home was destroyed.
In response to the tragedy, local businesses and organizations are stepping in to help the family begin the long road to recovery. One of those businesses is Wild West Hair Salon in Gladewater.
Salon owner Cindy Walls said the tragedy hit close to home after learning about the fire. Drawing from her own experience with a house disaster, Walls decided to organize a community donation effort to support the family.
“I’ve suffered a house disaster myself, and it’s taken years to get back on track,” Walls said. “I just think the community needs to come together and support this family in their time of need.”
Wild West Hair Salon is collecting donations of food, clothing, and essential items to help the family replace what was lost in the fire.
Additional support is also coming from local organizations, including the Upshur County Emergency Response Team, the American Red Cross, and The Agape House in Big Sandy.
“That’s what we’re here for,” said Ashley Duncan, leader of the Upshur County Emergency Response Team. “That’s what the team is put together for — to help others in our community, our local families, so we can reach out to them as soon as possible.”
Community members who would like to help can drop off donations at Wild West Hair Salon Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
