Ghana’s Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced that the first and second generation units have been successfully restored following the recent fire outbreak at the Ghana Grid Company substation at Akosombo Dam, which caused widespread power disruptions across the country.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, April 27, 2026, the Minister said the restoration marks a major step in efforts to stabilise the national grid after the blaze damaged a substation and affected power evacuation from the dam.
According to him, emergency technical work and the determination of engineers made it possible to restore the first unit, while a second unit was successfully brought back online shortly before his address.
“I am pleased to report that, through emergency technical interventions and sheer determination, the first generating unit was restored yesterday. This afternoon, I received confirmation that the second unit has also been successfully synchronised,” he said.
The Minister explained that the return of the two units is expected to ease the power shortages that led to outages in parts of the Ashanti, Central and Tema areas in the past two days.
He added that work is ongoing to restore the remaining units, with engineers working continuously to bring the system back to full capacity as quickly and safely as possible.
Mr. Jinapor praised engineers from the Volta River Authority and Ghana Grid Company for their commitment, noting that many of them stayed at the site for three straight days under difficult conditions.
“On behalf of government, I commend our engineers and technical teams for their dedication and professionalism. I am immensely proud of their efforts,” he said.
The Minister also disclosed that new bypass technology introduced during the crisis has proven effective and will support the restoration of the remaining units.
He expressed optimism that the full capacity of the Akosombo plant about 1,000 megawatts will soon be restored, bringing an end to the current power challenges and ensuring a stable electricity supply across the country.
