MECHANICSVILLE, Md. — Fire officials say “severe hoarding” enabled a fire in St. Mary’s County that led to the death of a 69-year-old to spread rapidly Friday morning.
Officials have identified the victim who died in the fire at 39580 Walnut Circle in Mechanicsville as Karen Krenzler.
Firefighters responded to the scene around 6:40 a.m.
When they arrived, they encountered what they described as “heavy fire conditions” throughout the two-story home.
They say the “extensive hoarding” forced them to fight the fire from outside as portions of the house collapsed.
Using heavy machinery, they were eventually able to find the remains of the woman.
Her body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore.
Officials are conducting an investigation into incident.
