On September 30, 2024, at 2:12 p.m., the Marlborough Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 46 Barnard Road. Crews reported a fire in a solar panel array that had burned through the roof and into the attic space, causing an estimated $50,000 in damages.
The first due engine company initiated a rapid fire attack, deploying a hose line through the front door and into the attic. The fire was quickly knocked down, and crews checked the attic for further fire extension.
A neighbor informed firefighters that the house had been vacant for a couple of weeks and was recently rented. In response to the incident, the power company and the city’s electrical inspector were requested to the scene.
Additionally, Southborough Fire Engine 22 and one of their ambulances responded to the working fire and provided a Rapid Intervention Team. Hudson and Northborough Fire Departments covered Marlborough’s stations during this time, and Patriot EMS was also on scene.
Although damage estimates were reported at $50,000, early intervention by the fire department likely helped minimize further damage. This incident underscores the critical importance of early fire detection systems, especially in residential areas where fires can escalate quickly.
