On September 23, 2024, at 2:45 PM, a fire broke out in a reefer container at the Port of Montreal, releasing harmful smoke that affected nearby neighborhoods. Authorities issued a preventive confinement notice, advising residents between Vimont Rue, Hochelaga Rue, Haig Avenue, and the Saint Lawrence River to close doors and windows and stay indoors. About 100 residents were evacuated, and firefighters fully extinguished the fire by 3 AM with no injuries reported. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

On September 23, 2024, a fire broke out in a reefer container at the Racine terminal at the Port of Montreal, where approximately 15,000 kilograms of lithium batteries were stored. The fire released a noxious cloud into the air, prompting residents in nearby areas to stay indoors. Around 100 people were evacuated, but fortunately, there were no injuries reported.
The Montreal Fire Department was alerted at approximately 2:45 p.m. and successfully extinguished the fire by 3 a.m. the following morning. Following the incident, the port’s prevention and security teams activated the emergency response plan in coordination with the fire department.
Once the fire was under control, the stay-at-home notice was lifted around 10:30 p.m., allowing normal operations at the port to resume.
Initial estimates of the damage are between 5,000 and 10,000 Canadian dollars, but since the incident was confined to a single container, the overall loss is expected to be minimal. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
In such situations, early fire detection technology is critical. Planck Vision Systems offers advanced thermal imaging technology that enables real-time monitoring of equipment conditions, allowing for early detection of abnormal heat situations and thereby preventing fires and minimizing losses.
This technology enhances operational efficiency and ensures safety in high-risk environments, making it essential for maintaining security in ports and similar facilities.
For Heavy Industry, Planck Vision Systems leads with superior thermal imaging tailored for diverse industries. Beyond detecting minute temperature variations, our always-on technology ensures system protection, operational excellence, and catches every anomaly. This vigilance minimizes risks, preempting system failures and potential threats.
