On September 3, 2024, at 1:50 PM, a power outage affected Alexandra, Johannesburg’s inner city, Midrand, and Reuven due to veld fires. The fires triggered a trip at Sebenza substation, causing an extensive blackout.
City Power reported that Johannesburg Emergency Services are on-site working to extinguish the fire beneath the substation’s transmission servitude.
City Power initially communicated the unplanned power disruption to residents at 1:50 PM via social media and later confirmed the fire-induced trip.
Spokesperson Isaac Mangena mentioned that operators have been dispatched to begin the restoration process once the fire is contained.
The restoration is expected to take several days. The estimated losses from the outage are expected to exceed $5 million.
The government is also enhancing fire prevention measures and cautioned residents against contributing to veld fires.

Scalable Solutions for Early Fire Detection
For early fire detection, Planck Vision TNC thermal imaging cameras are far superior to traditional systems that can alert to fire only after the visible consequences of smoke and flame are present. TNC cameras can help to prevent the destruction of goods and loss of life by surveilling for abnormal heat conditions before fires erupt.
