East Midlands Railway and Greater Anglia halted their services as Norfolk Fire and Rescue dealt with the blaze in the area of Maurice Gaymer Road. The factory, which housed gas cylinders and chemicals, generated large amounts of smoke, prompting Greater Anglia to advise residents to keep doors and windows closed.
At the height of the fire, six fire crews were on the scene. The fire service successfully extinguished the blaze around 11:30 a.m. and declared the railway safe for trains to resume. However, some train services might still face cancellations, delays, or revisions. Passengers traveling between Cambridge and Stansted Airport to Norwich were advised to use Stowmarket or Ipswich at no extra cost.
The fire caused an estimated £30 million in property damage. Fire commander Simon Mason reported that the building had been “significantly damaged” by the fire. Due to the nature of the industrial processes at the site, which included a large external nitrogen tank and several gas cylinders for welding and forklift operations, crews worked diligently to protect the nitrogen tank with a water curtain and swiftly removed the cylinders to mitigate explosion risks.
